BTW: I think there is a third option: If you cannot mend your clothes (and help from your friends or a repair cafe is also no option), just check out your neighborhood and search for some tailor („Änderungsschneiderei“).
Usually it’s not expensive, their wages are really small. So, you’ll a) help your local economy, b) avoid waste, and c) you may even end up with some clothes which will fit better than ever before and might last much longer – often new clothes come with e.g. really cheap zippers, it is very likely that the zipper from the tailor will last the next 20 years.
